Poha Ladoo

Ladoo or Laddu, however you may call it–  A very well known Indian sweet/dessert that is often prepared during the festive season in Indian kitchens. As sweet as the name sounds, this dessert is a must have for Indian Platters, whether it is a wedding or any other celebration. There are many varieties of ladoos like besan ki ladoo (made with chickpea flour), dry fruit ladoo, suji ladoo, coconut ladoo, motichur ladoo…..the list is endless! Today for Krishnasthami I prepared this Poha Ladoo as an offering to lord Krishna. It is a quick recipe that requires zilch extra effort to prepare unlike other ladoos.

Poha Ladoo/Laddu: A combination so beautiful in its flavors, it’s one of Hindu deity Lord Krishna’s favorites! Unlike some ladoos that are saccharine in their flavors, this ladoo is perfect in that it comprises of the lovely natural sugary flavor of jaggery, rich, buttery cashews, the subtle sweetness brought by fine shreds of coconut; this makes for a perfect offering during your pujas or even as a festive delicacy for your friends and family!

Poha Ladoo Recipe:

Poha laddu1

Dry roast the poha in a thick saucepan, over low heat. Keep stirring with the help of a spatula to avoid burning them and roast nicely till they turn light gold in color.

Transfer the poha to a blender and blend till it becomes smooth in texture. Add jaggery and a few cardamom seeds while blending. Make it into a smooth powder. You can also use sugar instead of jaggery if you want. But as jaggery is beneficial to health than refined sugar, I preferred using it for my ladoos. Also, as the combination of poha and jaggery is one Lord Krishna loves, I used it for my recipe as an offering to please him. 😀

Add some coconut powder for extra flavor. If you want to use fresh coconut, then grate the coconut and dry roast it in a pan till its raw flavor is gone, before you add it to your poha mix.

Heat some ghee in a small pan and when the ghee melts, add some cashews and raisins separately and fry them till they turn gold in color. Turn the heat off and add the fried nuts to the poha mix. Add some melted ghee to the poha mix and combine all the ingredients well.

Take small amounts of the poha mix in your hand and shape it into round balls. Wet your hands once in a while to help shape the ladoos easily. Transfer them into an air-tight container and store.

Poha ladoo tastes similar to sooji (semolina) ladoo. It is very easy to make and is super yum! Try it this festive season for a different yet delicious taste. I’m sure you’ll like them too!
